What is Alkyd Oil?
For painting commissions I use Alkyd Oils rather than Traditional Oils, for their fast drying times and therefore quick turnaround of your painting.
This paints use Alkyd oil-modified resins as medium where oil becomes an integral part of the resin molecule. The oil itself can be the same that is used for traditional oil paints, e.g. Linseed Oil and modified Linseed Oil version is not surprisingly, the most durable. Their most obvious characteristic is faster drying time compared to traditional oil colours. This means that the traditional oil techniques can be done in considerably less time and a painting can be completed in a few days and dry in a few weeks comparing with months or even years of drying required for traditional oils.
The disadvantage of Alkyd oils is that the pigment holding capacity is also different from traditional oils and colours have slightly greater transparency compared to classic oils which may result to less vibrand colours. However with glazing technique I use to create animal fur this extra transparence actually turns into advantage creating effect of more thick and realistic coat.
